The Challenge
THRE (Third Sector Human Rights and Equalities) is a Scotland-wide project led by GCVS in partnership with HTSI and EVOC. It supports third-sector organisations in taking a Human Rights and Equalities First Approach to their organisational development and delivery.
While THRE successfully delivers live training via Zoom, they recognised a need to extend their reach by creating flexible, accessible elearning resources that learners could complete at their own pace. The challenge was to create engaging, practical courses that would support individuals and teams in building their understanding of key concepts and applying human rights principles in day-to-day decision-making.
The Solution
After an in-depth research phase, which included attending the in-person training, we collaborated with THRE to design and develop two elearning courses:
- Human Rights and Equalities First Approach: The Basics
This course was based on THRE’s popular live training and provides learners with a strong foundation in human rights and equalities. It uses real-world examples and interactive activities, to introduce key concepts and ideas that help learners place human rights at the centre of their organisation’s work. - PANEL Principles: Human Rights and Equalities in Practice
This interactive toolkit is based on the Scottish Human Rights Commission support resources. It guides learners through applying the PANEL principles (Participation, Accountability, Non-Discrimination and Equality, Empowerment, and Legality) to their organisational processes.
We designed the courses to be visually engaging, easy to navigate, and practical, with a focus on helping learners connect theory to practice. The content was broken into manageable sections to support flexible, self-paced learning.
The Impact
The elearning resources have received positive feedback since their launch. Third-sector professionals appreciate the flexibility to learn on their own schedule and value the practical insights offered by the courses.
THRE now has a scalable, accessible solution that empowers organisations to adopt a human rights and equalities-first approach — helping to drive meaningful change across Scotland’s third sector.
