The Objective

Leading animal charity Blue Cross commissioned us to create a learning module to support the use of their PlanIt Blue project management approach. The Blue Cross recently became the first UK charity to be awarded the APM (Association for Project Management) Corporate Accreditation status for this new corporate approach to project management. The learning module was developed to help Blue Cross people understand, and where appropriate, implement the PlanIt Blue approach to the projects they’re involved in. It represented Stage 1 in a three tier learning programme, so had to be accessible to everyone in the organisation. This module forms part of a wider programme that includes a short animated video, documentation and face-to-face training.

The Solution

Working in partnership with the Blue Cross Project team, Little Man Project developed a 45-minute module in line with the PlanIt Blue brand and approach. This was based on a travel theme, which we incorporated in the elearning module. The module introduced users to the PlanIt Blue project management approach and showed them how they could use it for their projects. Learners were taken through a simulation, working with a project manager to complete a fictional project. This allowed us to provide a guided path through the project while including lots of interaction using quizzes, activities and sections of the existing animated video. The project manager role was narrated and represented their guide to the process and module.

Little Man Project produced the module within Articulate Storyline to allow future updates to be completed by Blue Cross who, like all our clients, were given the source files.

The Process

Given the strong brand and unique approach taken by Blue Cross, development of the module was very collaborative. This included regular contact with the project team based in Burford to ensure the solution was technically, culturally and brand accurate. The Blue Cross Project Development Manager also attended the recording of the audio narration to ensure that the audio accurately represented the character, brand and culture at Blue Cross.

The Impact

The module was rolled out across Blue Cross at the end of 2012 using a number of clever and brand related communication methods. This included an e-ticket featured in the module which was distributed to everyone accessing the module and offered prizes for those taking part to encourage take-up. We particularly enjoyed working with Blue Cross on this fun and informative module.

We found working with Little Man Project to be a very positive and valuable experience. For most of the staff at Blue Cross, project management is entirely new and something of a departure from their day to day work. As a result, we needed to find an engaging and interesting way of getting the key learning points across. From the start of the work through to its completion, we found that Little Man not only understood our specific needs but remained flexible and supportive along the way. We’re really pleased with the end result and know from the response by staff that have used it that it helped get the key messages across in an appealing and accessible way.
